“The psychologist Ethan Kross, who directs the Emotion and Self-Control Laboratory at the University of Michigan, is more my speed. In his forthcoming book, “Shift: Managing Your Emotions—So They Don’t Manage You,” Kross argues that, in addition to observing our emotional lives, we ought to actively modify them, using “shifters”—internal or external cues that reroute our trains onto more desirable tracks.”
